Certified Mail Cost in 2026: USPS Fees, Add-Ons, and Real Total Prices

If you are budgeting a Certified Mail send, calculate the total as postage plus the Certified Mail fee plus any optional service, such as Return Receipt Electronic or a paper Green Card. USPS changed all three components on July 12, so totals published earlier in 2026 are no longer current.

USPS changed prices twice in 2026
USPS implemented one set of prices on January 18 and another on July 12. The July change increased the 1-ounce stamped letter price from $0.78 to $0.82 and the metered/online letter price from $0.74 to $0.78. It also raised the Certified Mail fee from $5.30 to $5.55, Return Receipt Electronic from $2.82 to $2.91, and the paper Return Receipt from $4.40 to $4.65. The additional-ounce price remains $0.29. A 2-ounce stamped letter is now $1.11, and a 2-ounce metered letter is $1.07, before the Certified Mail fee and optional add-ons.
How to reduce cost
- Use metered or online letter postage when available: $0.78 instead of $0.82 for a 1-ounce letter.
- Choose Return Receipt Electronic when an electronic signature record meets the organization’s requirements: $2.91 instead of $4.65 for the paper Green Card.
- Avoid adding Return Receipt when only proof of mailing and delivery or attempted-delivery tracking is required.
- Confirm legal, regulatory, or contractual proof requirements before choosing the lower-cost option. A less expensive option does not carry equivalent evidentiary value in every legal or regulatory context.
